'Unlovable' Trailer: Melissa Leo Attempts To Help A Young Woman Deal With Sex & Love Addiction

“You have to save yourself, I can’t do this for you,” Melissa Leo says to Charlene deGuzman in the new trailer for the upcoming film “Unlovable.”Why? Because in the new film, Joy (deGuzman) is a sex and love addict and has asked Maddie (Leo) to be her sponsor and things aren’t as easy as either of them had hoped.

“Unlovable” follows Joy through her friendships with Maddie and Jim (John Hawkes) who appear to be estranged siblings. While Maddie is trying to keep Joy from having sex, Jim seems to be teaching her about friendship through the use of music. This seems to be a fresh take on the “romantic” comedy as this film isn’t so much a film about love, rather about the power of friendship as it appears to be an honest, heartfelt film that doesn’t try to say love will fix everything.

Sarah Adina Smith, (“Buster’s Mal Heart”), producer Mark Duplass and deGuzman collaborated on the script, which is based on deGuzman’s own experiences with addiction and recovery. “Unlovable” is directed by Suzi Yoonessi. Starring alongside deGuzman, Leo, and Hawkes is Paul James and Jake McDorman. Some of you may recognize those names sitting next to each other as “Unlovable” is bringing us a little “GRΣΣK” reunion.

Premiering at SXSW, “Unloveable” was picked up by Orion Classics for distribution.

“Unlovable” is set to be released theaters November 1, and digital and on-demand November 2.
