Thanks to its slasher set-up, Playstation Studios‘s “Until Dawn” is one of the past decade’s most popular horror video games. Now the game gets the big screen treatment, with Sony Pictures hoping they’ll capture the same slasher magic in the movie theater.
At least a slasher movie/videogame adaptation mash-up will appeal to the teen demographic. Good thing Sony has genre veteran David F. Sandberg behind the camera for this one. Fresh off the two “Shazam!” movies over Warner Bros., Sandberg’s previous horror efforts include 2016’s “Lights Out” and 2017’s “Annabelle: Creation.” But will “Until Dawn” match the huge box office numbers of his “Annabelle” sequel?
Here’s an official synopsis for “Until Dawn,” courtesy of Screen Gems:
One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the night again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.
“Until Dawn” stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, and Belmont Cameli. Maia Mitchell and Peter Stormare round out the main cast.
Sandberg directs “Until Dawn,” with Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman penning the film’s script. Producers on the film include Sandberg, Dauberman, Asa Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Lotta Losten, Roy Lee, and Mia Maniscalco. Charles Miller and Herman Hulst serve as executive producers.
“Until Dawn” hits theaters on April 25. Watch a trailer for the videogame adaptation below.
