Venice's Giornate Degli Autori Line-Up Features New Short From Céline Sciamma, Jean-Marc Vallée Tribute & More

Earlier this week, the Venice Film Festival announced the line-up for its 80th edition, including new films from Michael MannBradley CooperDavid FincherWoody Allen, and more. Now it’s time for Venice’s parallel section, Giornate Degli Autori (previously known as Venice Days), to promote the line-up of its 20th edition. What leads the pack there? Deadline has the scoop there. There’s a new short from Céline Sciamma, for one, but also ten films in competition for the GdA’s top prize, the Luigi De Laurentiis Lion of the Future award.

Tommaso Santambrogio‘s “Oceans Are The Real Continents” opens the GdA’s competition titles this year, a full-length version of the director’s 2019 short of the same name. Other competition titles include Ariane Louis-Seize‘s “Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person,” “Backstage” from directing duo Afef Ben Mahmoud and Khalil Benkirane, and “Through The Night” from Belgian director Delphine Girard. Another film to keep an eye on in the GdA competition: Élise Girard‘s “Sidonie In Paris,” which stars Isabelle Huppert as a writer mourning her husband who travels to Kyoto. A full list of the GdA’s competitive titles is below.

Other highlights for the GdA this year include Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman‘s period satire “COUP!” with Peter Sarsgaard, which closes Venice’s parallel line-up out of competition. Special events for GdA this year include Teona Strugar Mitevska‘s “21 Days Until The End Of The World” and “Bye Bye Tiberias,” the latest doc from Palestinian-French director Lina Soualem. There’s also a day-long tribute dedicated to Jean-Marc Vallée and Québec cinema, highlighted by a 4K restoration of Vallée’s 2005 film “C.R.A.Z.Y..” GdA also continues its partnership with the Miu Miu fashion house with two new shorts part of its Women’s Tale initiative, including Lila Avilés‘ “Eye Two Times Mouth.” And then there’s Sciamma’s suprise short “This Is How A Child Becomes A Poet.” No surprise that Sciamma shows up for GdA; she was previous president of the jury for the Venice alternate.

But this year, Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues heads the GdA jury, with the other jury members part of the European Parliament’s 27 Times Cinema program. The jury’s awards come with cash prizes: €100,000 for the Luigi De Laurentiis Lion of the Future award, and €20,000 for the GdA Directors Award, split equally between the filmmaker who wins and the winning film’s international distributor.

Here’s the full line-up for the 20th edition of the Giornate Degli Autori. The parallel section runs the same days as the Venice Film Festival, from August 30 to September 9.
