Video Essay Brings Together Wes Anderson’s ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ & Rian Johnson’s ‘The Brothers Bloom’

The Royal Tenenbaums The Brothers BloomWhile this morning brought the first trailer for the hotly anticipated “Rouge One: A Star Wars Story,” directed by indie breakout Gareth Edwards, there looms in the future another ‘Star Wars’ film directed by another indie director who hit it big: Rian Johnson. Slated to take over the main ‘Star Wars’ story line from J.J. Abrams, Johnson is quite possibly the most exciting filmmaker that Disney has managed to lock down. His rather limited catalogue is comprised of just three films. But, as anyone familiar with Johnson’s work surely knows, each of those three films is fantastic, original, and completely idiosyncratic, the culmination of which was the excellent “Looper.”

But before “Looper” Johnson made two much smaller flicks: the high school detective noir “Brick” and the crime caper “The Brothers Bloom.” Now, a new video essay is here to help run down just how great the sorely under seen “The Brothers Bloom” is. The video, from the folks at CineFix, is another entry in their Like It/Love It series, which posits that if you like one film, you’ll love another. The like it to the ‘Brothers Bloom’’s love it is the Wes Anderson classic “The Royal Tenenbaums.” On the surface the films are ostensibly very different, but, as the video clearly explains, both are quirky and meticulous films loaded down with heart and character. Also, they both have superb soundtracks.

So, if you’re a fan of Anderson or “The Royal Tenenbaums,” or simply stoked for the new iteration of ‘Star Wars’ films, check out the video below. Or, even better, do yourself a favor and go rent “The Brothers Bloom” right now.
