‘Viena & The Fantomes’ Trailer: Dakota Fanning Stars In Gerardo Naranjo’s Rock Drama

Being with the band is in of itself a cliche yet it remains this weirdly intriguing fantasy that transitions from generation to generation. It’s a topic that dominates the narrative themes and structures of “Viena and The Fantomes.” Set in a world of pure punk rock fantasy, this all too common tale of the young roadie suddenly spirals outside of the usual safe boundaries.

The stark visual cues and entrancingly bold moments are just one of the ways writer/director Gerardo Naranjo brings the story to life. Fans of his 2011 film “Miss Bala” could be understandably curious about the almost decade long absence from the big screen. While “Viena” was lingering in distribution purgatory, the director took his talents elsewhere. His work can be seen in popular series like “Narcos” and “Fear the Walking Dead,” both havens for Naranjo’s distinctive approach to darker subject matters.

Dakota Fanning assumes the lead role of Viena. The actress navigates a drug and alcohol filled nightmare based on the delusions of greatness by proxy. In a nod to her abilities, the very story itself rises and falls on how she delivers on its promise. Along for the ride are other respected young actresses including the future Catwoman Zoe Kravitz and “Westworld” star Evan Rachel Wood.

The Film’s Synopsis:

“Viena, a beautiful, young roadie, travels with the Fantomes, an edgy post-punk band, as they tour through America in the 1980s. What starts out as a wild ride of concerts and parties quickly descends into an alcohol and drug induced haze. Viena finds herself trapped in a dangerous love triangle between a good natured roadie and an unbalanced band member, as she is forced to find her own means of survival-no matter the cost.”

As with many films currently set for distribution, “Viena” will be released on digital as well as on-demand services. Viewers can take the ride with this punk rock illusion when it premieres June 30. Watch the film’s trailer now.
