Disney’s plan to dominate the pop culture world with Marvel on every platform continues with the looming opening of their streaming platform Disney+ expected to open at the end of this year. And it looks like those rumors that the purported Scarlet Witch limited series actually being a two-hander Vision and Scarlet Witch show are true. THR reports tonight that Marvel has hired “Captain Marvel” writer Jac Schaeffer to act as showrunner on the series.
Schaeffer, who wrote the upcoming “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” remake “The Hustle” with Anne Hathaway, and wrote and directed the 2009 feature film debut “TiMER,” appears to be something of a favorite over at Marvel and perhaps becoming a go-to in-house writer. Schaeffer wrote “Captain Marvel,” was hired to pen “Black Widow” starring Scarlett Johansson and now is heading up her own show.

Details on the “Vision & Scarlett Witch” show are unknown, but presumably, the limited-series would be a prequel, before the A.I. android was killed in “Avengers: Infinity War” (though its entirely conceivably the death isn’t permanent).

Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen are expected to reprise their roles as the romantically-involved superheroes. Two other limited series’ are in development at Marvel Studios for Disney+: a Loki show that would star Tom Hiddleston (again, presumably a prequel) and a buddy, team-up show featuring the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Other rumored, but unconfirmed shows are a Hawkeye as a mentor to new marksman narrative and a Groot and Rocket story. We’ll see if those rumors pan out.

Disney+ is ramping up its MCU superhero shows as Marvel disentangles itself from Netflix who has canceled three of its Marvel shows, “Daredevil,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage.” “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher” still have one more season on Netflix each, but its presumed both shows are getting their plugs pulled soon thereafter, and the studios business relationship will be over (the Netflix/Disney deal states none of these characters can appear in any other form for at least two years, so don’t expect quick Disney+ announcements).
Disney+ MCU shows are said to feature B and C-list Marvel characters that fans adore, but may not be able to carry an entire feature film. Plus, with Disney+ looking to rival Marvel, what better way to make their streaming service seem essential by hosting some of the most beloved movie superheroes there exclusively. [THR]
