Got a Tip?

‘Wanted 2’ Writers Say Story Will Feature New Female Lead, Will Be After The Events In The First Film

nullDespite “Wanted” running up decent domestic grosses, it’s been an unfathomably long — by Hollywood standards — four years with no sequel since its initial run. While creatively speaking it seemed like there was no need, or no way, for a sequel to happen — most of the major characters were killed in the climax, including (SPOILER) Angelina Jolie — the studio has steadily pushed forward with their plans, and one of the film’s writers recently spoke about the direction they’re taking the film.

In an interview with Hollywood.com, Derek Haas (co-writer, alongside Michael Brandt, of the original film) elaborated on his earlier comments that the sequel would “take off after the events of what just happened [in the first film]” and “pick up Wesley [James McAvoy] a few years later.” The idea is to, contrary to earlier rumors of prequel, follow McAvoy's character as he brings someone else into the fold. "The only thing I can tell you is that Wesley [James McAvoy] is now, four years later, recruiting a young woman who is in his situation in the first movie," Brandt explained. "She's got a sh**ty life. He's sort of in the Fox [Jolie's] role. This new girl is brought into the world."

You might remember that a couple of years ago Kristen Stewart was being rumored as the potential new lead for the series. So perhaps this new female lead idea isn't so new after all, but it seems to be one the studio is finally on board with. Because as Brandt stresses, there is no way Jolie is coming back — at least not in any movie he would be a part of. "Angelina Jolie gets shot in the head and everyone's like, 'Oh, are you going to bring back Fox?' I said, 'Did you see the bullet go into her head?' And they say, 'Oh, she can take one of those milk baths!' We never wanted to do that movie," he said.

Keep in mind that “Wanted 2” is still a long way from happening, the writers are only just “readying to deliver their second draft” to the studio, and Timur Bekmambetov currently has a few other projects on his plate. So all you Mark Millar fans will have to console yourselves with spy photos from “Kick-Ass 2” for now.
