While Paul Thomas Anderson continues to circle around using 65mm again for his next project, let’s turn our attention back to last year when the acclaimed filmmaker released his hazy and warm adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s “Inherent Vice.” Now, a behind-the-scenes look at the film is making the rounds via Cigarettes & Red Vines, and it provides another peek at Anderson’s swirling and woozy film.
Running twelve minutes long, titled “Chryskylodon Blues” after the rehab center seen near the end of the film, and directed by Laura Colella on Super 8 film, the short documentary is a fly-on-the-wall look at what it looks like to work on Anderson’s sets, with music from The Growlers – they played the Boards in the film – scoring the doc, and text from the novel spoken by Theo Green.

Even disregarding the “Inherent Vice” connection, Colella’s short is worthwhile in its own right and a welcome alternative to the bland EPKs and featurettes usually released by studios. The only problem to be had with this behind-the-scenes look at Anderson’s film, is that Warner Bros. didn’t include it as part of last month’s home video release. Fortunately it’s now available online for all to see.
