Scott Cooper’s “Black Mass” starring Johnny Depp in a possible credibility comeback role is right around the corner. The movie will make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, it’ll turn up at the Toronto International Film Festival and it’ll likely be in Telluride too. In short, this is potential Oscar bait material and every festival wants a piece of it.
In the lead-up to the premiere in Venice, Warner Bros. has unloaded a trunk full of new images from the film, plus released a revealing new TV spot. “Black Mass” tells the true story of Whitey Bulger (Depp), the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.
The film’s completely stacked, powerhouse cast also includes Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rory Cochrane, Jesse Plemons, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Juno Temple, W Earl Brown, Corey Stoll, Julianne Nicholson, Adam Scott, and Peter Sarsgaard.
