It’s possible to put a new spin on an old story, and that’s just what filmmaker Sarik Andreasyan tries to do with "American Heist." All the familiar ingredients are here for this crime thriller, along with an Oscar winning actor (Adrien Brody), Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), someone from the "Fast And Furious" franchise (Jordana Brewster) and an R&B singer (Akon). Tell me if you’ve heard this before: someone trying to put his past behind him is lured into "one last job" by his troubled brother, who has just been released from a ten year stint in prison. And cue the standard batch of conflicted emotions, explosions, and hey, a helicopter slamming into a building. But this genre flick never quite comes together with our review out of TIFF calling it " a complete mess, with one-note characters, an idiotically planned out bank job, and the climactic heist edited and directed with the finesse of a blind butcher."
