This summer, you won’t have any shortage of young, hopeful, beautiful teenagers falling in love and then (possibly) dying. Shailene Woodley battles cancer and finds romance in “The Fault In Our Stars,” and not to be outdone, Chloe Moretz will swoon before getting in a car crash in “If I Stay.” And no, that’s not a spoiler, that’s the plot.
Based on the book by Shauna Cross, the story follows Mia, a musically gifted 17-year-old girl who falls for a local punk rocker in Portland, and no this is not the premise of a skit on “Portlandia.” She seems to have found “the one” when suddenly, a car accident puts her into a coma, the music swells, and she’ll have to decide whether or not life is worth living, or if she should just leave this mortal coil.
It’s all a bit overwrought, but we’re probably a couple decades too old for this anyway. Get out the Kleenex on August 22nd.
