Reuniting “Silver Linings Playbook” leads Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier’s “Serena” seems to be a world away from that dramatic romantic comedy. You may have heard that the release of “Serena” has been delayed for the past two years, with Bier having completed two films in the interim ("Love Is All You Need," and "A Second Chance"). So what happened to "Serena"? It sounds like a mix of Bier being busy and trying to find the movie in the editing room.
Once a project for Darren Aronofsky and Angelina Jolie back in the day (imagine that now?), “Serena” is about newlyweds running a timber business in 1930s North Carolina who run into problems when she can’t bear children. Here’s the official synopsis:
North Carolina mountains at the end of the 1920s – George and Serena Pemberton, love-struck newly-weds, begin to build a timber empire. Serena soon proves herself to be equal to any man: overseeing loggers, hunting rattle-snakes, even saving a man’s life in the wilderness. With power and influence now in their hands, the Pembertons refuse to let anyone stand in the way of their inflated love and ambitions. However, once Serena discovers George’s hidden past and faces an unchangeable fate of her own, the Pemberton’s passionate marriage begins to unravel leading toward a dramatic reckoning.
