Watch: Matt Damon Is The Perfect Weapon In Super Bowl Spot For ‘Jason Bourne’

Bourne 5

Set place in 2004, it’s been twelve years since we’ve seen Matt Damon’s now iconic super spy Jason Bourne in movie years. Last we left him off in “The Bourne Ultimatum,” the super agent had discovered the story of his true identity, was presumed dead, but was actually swimming to safety in the East River. Meanwhile, at the end of "The Bourne Legacy," supervisor Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) is thrown under the bus by the CIA during Federal investigations when the Blackbriar and Treadstone operations are exposed.

But in the newly titled “Jason Bourne,” the fourth installment of the Jason Bourne series and the fifth in the overall series, the super resourceful agent has finally resurfaced. Why? Gleaning from the trailer, NSA surveillance technology has finally tracked down his whereabouts. But more importantly, a new plot has come to light that has caught’s Bourne attention and made him slip-up and unveil his location.

Damon and director Paul Greengrass had grappled several times over the years about whether to revisit the character, often remaining non-committal, claiming to be waiting for a story or inspiration and or just ruling out the idea of more Jason Bourne films completely. But it appears that inspiration did strike in the post-economic Global crisis and the post-Edward Snowden world; a new era of fear, paranoia and anxiety about unchecked government powers and invasions of our collective privacy under the guise of fighting terrorism.

Directed once again by Greengrass, this time written by Damon, Greengrass and longtime ‘Bourne’ editor Christopher Rouse, The Bourne Enemy” co-stars returning franchise characters played by Joan Allen, Julia Stiles and Scott Shepherd (whether David Strathairn comes back is unclear) and introduces new antagonists and CIA agents played by Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed and Vincent Cassel. “Jason Bourne” opens in theaters on July 29th.
