Advertising is a flat circle. Earlier this year we saw Matthew McConaughey and Nicolas Winding Refn pair up for some Lincoln car ads that bordered on parody. Well, look under the tree, because Santa Claus has two more ads from the pair, and once again, they walk the knife edge of ridiculousness.
The first spot for the Lincoln MKZ hybrid finds McConaughey talking about finding the balance between not hugging trees but being a good dude for the environment. Basically, it’s a way to dance around being an environmentalist while still owning a car, and having a beard apparently helps. The second spot is actually pretty great, ditching voiceover for a mostly silent ad that finds McConaughey waiting out a rainstorm before hopping in the Lincoln, opening the sunroof (to reveal the dazzling panel of gauges and buttons from overhead — great shot) and hitting the road. Effective stuff.
Check ’em out both below — the spots will start airing on TV starting January 1st. [Autoblog]
