As you might know from some various burbling around the interwebs, select groups of journalists were invited to see 30 minutes of footage from “Star Trek Into Darkness” this week. While we weren’t one of them (ring us up J.J.!), the big reveal out of the presentation seemed to be Peter Weller‘s role in the movies as….the father of Carol Marcus played by Alice Eve. Spoiler? Hardly. J.J. Abrams knows exactly what he’s showing to press and when so…yeah, yawn. But now the weekend has arrived with a brand new teaser trailer for the movie and it certainly seems like Abrams is wearing his sci-fi influences right on his sleeve.
With costumes that look ripped out of “Tron: Legacy” (nice helmet, bro), some future worlds boasting a “Blade Runner” griminess and a pretty obvious and huge nod to “Star Wars” (basically a recreation of the scene where Luke Skywalker flies in to destroy the Death Star), this one looks to be ticking a number of boxes. And what the hell, it’s pretty exciting stuff. Abrams knows how to put off spectacle and excitement and while diehard Trekkies might frown at the less cerebral (no scenes of dudes talking on the deck of the Enterprise and working things out) and more explosion-y take, there’s no doubt this is the stuff of good popcorn.
“Star Trek Into Darkness” opens on May 17th. Watch below.
