Sex addiction is a very real problem, but we’re betting it’s only at the movies where someone suffering from the disease would have Gwyneth Paltrow strutting around in lingerie in their apartment. But such is the battle Mark Ruffalo faces in the dramedy “Thanks For Sharing” from “The Kids Are All Right” writer Stuart Blumberg.
Co-starring Josh Gad, Tim Robbins, Patrick Fugit, Joely Richardson and Pink (who is actually pretty good in this), the film tells the story of one man (Ruffalo), five years sober, who finds his struggle with sex addiction tested when he gets into a new relationship (with Paltrow), all while mentoring another young man (Gad) newly dealing with this issue. It’s potentially interesting subject matter, but it all winds up a bit trite, with a movie that’s a bit tonally uneven and never quite as insightful as it wants to be. As we wrote in our review from TIFF last year: the film “is great at showing the highs of sobriety and lows of falling off the wagon, but the difficult middle ground of maintaining the disease on a day-to-day basis is mostly left to montages of sexy billboards on buildings or sexy people walking down the street, as if to rhetorically ask the audience: Isn’t sex everywhere?”
