Watch: New TV Spot For ‘Transformers: Age Of Extinction’ Plus New Photos Of Mark Wahlberg In Action

Transformer: Age of Extinction

So what’s the deal with Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Age Of Extinction”? Is it a reboot or do over now that Shia LaBeouf is no longer part of the series? Apparently, the only rebooting Bay is doing is changing leads. The destruction of Chicago at the end of “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon” is still in play in the upcoming sequel, and the outcome of that disaster turned humanity against the Transformers, so now they’re all in hiding.

“Optimus has lost all faith in humankind and I’m trying to convince him there is still good in the world and we need to work together,” new star Mark Wahlberg said in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. Or as Bay says, “[Optimus] has done good for earth, and he’s been f–ked over.”

What else is going on in the movie? Well, there’s a gigantic dinobot named Grimlocke, a fan favorite. Why is this character suddenly part of the series? “I like to keep things very much in the dark. But yes, you’ll understand why they’re there when you see the movie. If you think I’m supposed to give away a lot of story points? No way! Keep it secret,” Bay told the magazine.

What about the “Gun Face” character seen in the latest trailer? Apparently he’s neither Autobot nor Decepticon and he might set up future installments of the would-be trilogy. “Lockdown is an interesting character. He travels the galaxy, he works for somebody else. And he’s here for one person, one alien, and then he’s out of here,” Bay said. “Lockdown’s ship has a lot of meaning that can go into other movies. There’s a lot of backstory about that ship that’s not laid out here. You’re going to see a few things where you’re like ‘What is that? And what is that?’ And you’re going to see a couple shots like, ‘Wait a minute, who are they?’ But we don’t answer those questions.”

Sounds like the series is switching things up as much as they can without a total narrative overhaul. “Transformers: Age Of Extinction” hits on June 27th. Check out the new photos and TV spot below.
