It has been a long and rather quiet year for Zhang Yimou‘s "Coming Home" following its Cannes Film Festival debut in 2014. Reviews were mostly mixed and it seems there was no rush to get the drama into U.S. cinemas. But now it’s on the way and the first domestic trailer has landed for the picture.
Starring Gong Li and Chen Daoming, the epic story follows a devoted couple who are forced to separate when Lu is arrested and sent to a labor camp as a political prisoner, just as his wife is injured in an accident. Released during the last days of the Cultural Revolution, he finally returns home only to find that his beloved wife has amnesia and remembers little of her past. And yet, despite that intriguing set up, according to Jessica Kiang, Yimou doesn’t quite deliver, as she writes in her review that it’s a "missed opportunity for something of greater depth."
"Coming Home" opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 9th.
