Even though we were just declined an interview request with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams during their press day at Cannes (boo!), that hasn’t dampened our enthusiasm for their forthcoming “Blue Valentine,” directed by Derek Cianfrance.
The clip from the film, which follows an imploding couple (Gosling/Williams) with a child who are on the verge of a break-up and retreat to a motel to salvage and reminisce about their 10-year marriage, seems to find the lovers during happier times. In the brief scene, Gosling has chosen what will be “their song.” The scene feels almost uncomfortably, bracingly real and it’s fascinating to watch the actors play off each other. Oh yeah, the song in question? Penny & The Quarters’ “Me And You,” an obscure soul song compiled in one of the (awesome) Eccentric Soul compilations from Numero Group (which are definitely worth tracking down).
The film has already premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was met with rave reviews, and will make its international bow next week. The film will be released by the Weinstein Company on December 26th.
