Got a Tip?

Watch The Sci-Fi Short Film ‘The Gift’ Which Is Causing A Hollywood Bidding War

Commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch is making a name for himself around Hollywood with his short film, “The Gift.”

Rinsch is a director in Ridley Scott’s commercial house RSA and was in line to direct the forthcoming “Alien” prequel until Scott took the job himself (Scott wanted Rinsch — who is romantically involved with Scott’s filmmaker daughter Jordan Scott — to take the helm, 20th Century Fox wouldn’t greenlit it without him at the helm).

Rinsch was then selected to take part in the Phillips short-film project in which five directors were to shoot films though they each had to use the same piece of dialogue. Yesterday, a bidding war broke out between several studios, including Warner Bros. and Fox, for the rights to Rinsch’s completed film and it’s easy to see why.

The film, while enigmatic, is very slick, stylized piece of filmmaking that proves Rinsch to be very capable of handling complicated, effects heavy action pieces. The story itself revolves around a mysterious box containing a unicorn that everyone wants to be get their hands on. The film is being eyed to be blown up into a feature length film. The short itself is superbly shot and looks great, but it didn’t particularly wow us either. Story-wise, it feels like something we’ve seen before but it’s also only a few minutes long and feature adaptation would probably flesh things a whole lot more.

Who will end up with the rights to the prized film remains to be seen, but Fox is being considered as the studio favored to win due to Scott’s longterm relationship with the studio. While we wait for ink to dry on a contract, check out the film below:
