Of the three big superhero movies this year, “The Wolverine” might well be the least anticipated at this point. “Iron Man 3” had the heat off “The Avengers,” and has already made a billion dollars, while “Man Of Steel” has a reboot, the Christopher Nolan factor and some pretty amazing trailers. Whereas while James Mangold‘s film is from the longest-running superhero franchise currently going (it’s thirteen years since Hugh Jackman first donned the claws), it’s coming off two sub-standard films in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “X-Men: First Class,” and it’s reflected in the relative lack of buzz for the film.
That said, it doesn’t arrive until the end of July, so Fox have plenty of time to correct that, and the new trailer that just arrived should help quite a bit. It’s not wildly different to what we’ve seen so far, but it takes its time a little more, and feels a bit more muscular and confident as a result, particularly with some of the dodgy effects from previous promos seemingly more completed at this point.
We’re still not entirely sold, but we liked what we read of the script a while back, Mangold is a solid pair of hands, and there’s enough here to suggest that we might have something of a return to form for the X-franchise.
