While “Monsters” helmer Gareth Edwards has taken a huge leap from his tiny breakout film, directing next year’s massive “Godzilla,” the success of his eerie creature feature is something producers have been unable to leave behind. And so of course, no time has been wasted in mounting a sequel to “Monsters”—bearing the foreboding title “Monsters: The Dark Continent“—and though filming only got underway this past spring, we already have a teaser trailer to hint at what’s in store.
The follow-up (dubbed a “continuation”) has swapped out Edwards for first-time feature filmmaker and TV regular Tom Green (“Misfits,” “Blackout“), and the script from Jay Basu (“The Dinosaur Project,” “Fast Girls“) is set a few years after the original, with the U.S. military in the Middle East confronting another “infected zone.” Johnny Harris (“Snow White & The Huntsman,” “Welcome To The Punch“), Sam Keeley (“What Richard Did“) and Joe Dempsie (“Skins,” “Game Of Thrones“) lead the cast this time around, and while you don’t see any monsters just yet, you do get a sense of the tone everyone is aiming for.
We’re cautiously curious, and we’ll see how it all works out when it arrives in theaters next year. [Empire]
