Got a Tip?

Watch The First 2 Clips From Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Venice Opener ‘The Truth’

Fall festival season seems to always be dominated by the biggest names in Hollywood. Films like “Joker,” “Ad Astra,” “The Irishman,” and “Knives Out” (just to name several) gain all the headlines because of their star-studded casts and big-name filmmakers. But honestly, if you put us in a corner, we’d have to say that “The Truth” might be the film we’re most excited to see this fall.

Why are we excited to see a modestly-budgeted film with no massive CGI effects, on-set drama, or blockbuster potential? We can answer that with just one name — Hirokazu Kore-eda. The incredible filmmaker has not only earned out admiration and acclaim multiple times throughout the years, but he’s reached a level where every film he releases is instantly a “drop everything you’re doing for two hours” must-see event. And the fact that “The Truth” also has an incredible cast and a fascinating story is just icing on the cake.

The film stars Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, and Ethan Hawke. As mentioned, “The Truth” is directed by Kore-eda, who is probably best known for last year’s “Shoplifters,” which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. This film marks his English-language debut and considering it’s kicking off Venice this year, we’re expecting to be wowed yet again by this masterful filmmaker.

“The Truth” is debuting as the Opening Night selection at this year’s Venice Film Festival. A theatrical release has not been announced, as of yet. You can watch the first two clips from the film below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Fabienne (Catherine Deneuve) is a star; a star of French cinema. She reigns amongst men who love and admire her. When she publishes her memoirs, her daughter Lumir (Juliette Binoche) returns from New York to Paris with her husband (Ethan Hawke) and young child. The reunion between mother and daughter will quickly turn to confrontation: truths will be told, accounts settled, loves and resentments confessed.
