So, Ben Affleck has made a movie about making a movie. Kind of. Part period drama, part thriller, part comedy, and all based on a wild true story, there are a lot of elements at play in "Argo." With the first trailer now landing, it looks like yet another solid flick from the actor turned director.
Based on the fascinating, must-read Wired article “How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran,” "Argo" centers on the real-life C.I.A. plan to rescue a group of diplomats from Tehran after the 1979 Iranian revolution by claiming they're part of a Hollywood movie crew shooting a film. Indeed, the tale could easily be played for laughs — and to be certain, there is an element of absurdity to it all — but Affleck seems to have struck the right balance between how surreal and very dangerous the operation is. It certainly doesn't hurt that he's lined up an insanely talented cast to back him up, with Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Taylor Schilling and more rounding out the extensive ensemble. All told, it looks like another winner from Affleck.
Could Oscar be in the works for the film? It's a helluva competitive year, but with an October 12th date, you can bet Warner Bros. has that goal in mind. Watch below. [via The Film Stage]
