It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a decade since genre favorite Don Coscarelli delivered the outrageous “Bubba Ho-Tep.” That film which pit Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell, of course) and JFK (Ossie Davis, naturally) against an Egyptian mummy was a hit, and while an idea for a sequel, “Bubba Nosferatu,” knocked around for a while, it never really panned out. However, fans take heart as Coscarelli is back with a brand new feature and his flair for the weird is still very much intact.
The director hit Fantastic Fest this weekend to show off footage from “John Dies At The End,” the rest of us who weren’t able to be in Austin will still get a bit of a treat as the trailer has now arrived. Starring Paul Giamatti, Doug Jones, Chase Williamson and Clancy Brown, the story centers around a street drug known as Soy Sauce that takes users on a pretty damn trippy headtrip, with a side effect that leaves some users inhuman. Believe it or not, this is actually based on a book, but either way, Coscarelli looks to be having a ball but if we had one minor quibble it’s that Giamatti is acting a whole other level making his less experienced co-stars look even more out of their depth. But perhaps in the overall tone of the movie, that might not be too much of an issue.
Anyway, no release date yet but keep at an eye out for the flick in 2012. Watch below. [AICN]
