Every now and then, Will Ferrell likes to mix up his big screen comedies with lower-key dramatic fare. “Winter Passing,” “Stranger Than Fiction” and now “Everything Must Go” has found Ferrell stretching his wings, and while he’s solid in these kinds of roles, he’s yet to turn in a flick with the kind of Tom Hanks or Robin Williams crossover appeal.
Inspired by a Raymond Carver short story, the film follows a recovering alcoholic (Ferrell) who holds a yard sale of his life belongings after he gets fired and comes home to find that his wife has thrown all his stuff on the lawn. While the film split the Playlist crew (our man at LFF was less enthusiastic than our dude at TIFF) but both agreed Ferrell was in excellent form and is worth seeing. The trailer plays up the sunnier moments of the film, but it does go to darker places too. As we mentioned, Ferrell is solid as is the supporting cast around, with Rebecca Hall once again showing up, killing it and making it look easy.

Adapted and directed by Dan Rush, and based on a short story by Raymond Carver, EVERYTHING MUST GO tells the story of NICK PORTER (WILL FERRELL) a career salesman whose days of being on top are long gone. The same day Nick gets fired, for falling off the wagon one last time, he returns home to discover his wife has left him, changed the locks on their suburban home and dumped all his possessions out on the front yard. Faced with his life imploding, Nick puts it all on the line – or more properly, on the lawn – reluctantly holding a yard sale that becomes a unique strategy for survival.
