Woody Allen doesn’t act often these days, and it’s even rarer that he’ll step in front of the camera for someone else’s film. But when he does, he rarely loses a step, and everything we’ve come to know about the writer/director/actor’s screen presence is here fully formed in “Fading Gigolo,” the latest directorial effort from John Turturro.
As you might expect, this one is a trifle, a light little bit of comedy and as such, it’s endearing enough. Woody Allen plays a bookseller how helps his friend, played by the film’s writer/director John Turturro, raise some extra cash by engaging him in the world’s oldest profession. Yep, Woody is Turturro’s pimp, and he gets between the sheets with Sharon Stone and a feisty Sofia Vergara. Again, the stakes for this one are just to entertain you for about ninety minutes or so, and it looks like it may do just that.
No release date for this one, but we’ll see how it all works when it screens at TIFF.
