When you hear about “The Mandalorian,” there’s plenty to get excited for. The first live-action “Star Wars” series is coming to Disney+ in November, and sounds like it could be special. The series is spearheaded by Jon Favreau, with an all-star group of directors and actors, telling a story that we haven’t really seen explored on screen. And for film fans, there’s the added bonus of seeing Werner Herzog acting in a “Star Wars” project.
That’s right, the acclaimed filmmaker (and occasional actor) is lined up to play an unknown villain in the “Star Wars” universe. We live in strange and exciting times, people. And in a new interview with the AP, Herzog explains how he got involved with “The Mandalorian,” while also admitting something pretty shocking.
“I was invited by Jon Favreau, who started this whole series, to act,” said Herzog. “I looked at the screenplays, and I had the feeling, although I know very little about ‘Star Wars,’ I had the feeling that yes, I could do it. It’s a character in whom you cannot trust. And I said, ‘Yes, I can do that.’”
He added, “It was filmed, not like all the other ‘Star Wars’ or other big event films…As an actor, you see the entire planet, you see the landscape, you see the formation…It’s not green screen and artificiality. It brings movie-making back where it should be”
Considering “Star Wars” has been around for over four decades and features some of the biggest, most iconic films in history, it’s a genuine surprise when you meet someone who hasn’t even seen one of the movies. Well, Herzog is one of those people.
He admitted, “I have to confess, I never saw a single [‘Star Wars’ film]. I’ve seen some trailers, I’ve seen some excerpts here and there. I know about the whole franchise and about the toys for the kids.”
Regardless of whether he knows the ins and outs of the galaxy far, far away, we’ll have to see how Herzog does on screen when “The Mandalorian” joins the launch line-up on Disney+ on November 12.
