In a world where Black Lives Matter protests are still happening in the streets of some of the biggest cities in the US, now is probably the perfect time for Hulu to release the upcoming comedy series, “Woke.”
As seen in the trailer for “Woke,” the show follows the story of a Black artist, Keef, who has made a name for himself as a cartoonist that always tries to “keep things light” and avoid any sort of controversial stances and opinions. However, that all changes when he’s wrongfully detained (aka beat up) by police officers who mistake him for a suspect in a crime. After the altercation, Keef has a new “superpower” where inanimate objects come to life and talk to him about the ills of the world. You see, Keef has become woke, and he now sees all the injustices that surround him and feels the need to speak out.
While that doesn’t necessarily seem like the makings of a hilarious sitcom, “Woke” has an incredible cast that will help land the jokes and keep you laughing while also maybe learning a thing or two. The cast is led by Lamorne Morris as Keef. He’s joined by Sasheer Zamata, Blake Anderson, and comedian T. Murph.
Hulu has recently enjoyed some success when it comes to adult comedies. In addition to “Woke,” the streaming service has found critical acclaim with the series “Ramy,” which landed a number of Emmy nominations. There’s also series such as “Shrill” and the criminally underrated “Pen15.”
“Woke” arrives on Hulu on September 9.
Here’s the synopsis:
