Can 2017 save the DC Films cinematic universe? Granted, both “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” wound up with decent balance sheets, but they were critically thrashed, and no one could say they had the same universal love among fanboys like the Marvel movies have received. Warner Bros. and co. still need to prove themselves to some degree, and they are beating their rivals to their gate with the first female superhero blockbuster in “Wonder Woman.”
It’s a big job for director Patty Jenkins to bring the character to the big screen, but speaking with Time, she reveals that Richard Donner‘s seminal “Superman” was a bit of a guiding light.

“We’ve spent years treating male heroes in certain ways,” she said. “I just applied those same tropes to her, and all these incredible radical moments suddenly appear to an audience.”
As for Gal Gadot, it’s important the character has some dimensionality, too. “We knew it was tricky. We wanted to find the balance between portraying her as confident and strong and feminine and warm,” she adds. “I didn’t want her to be a ball-buster. I didn’t want her to be bossy. You can be powerful and also loving.”
