Got a Tip?

Wong Kar-Wai Set To Produce A ‘Blossoms’ Series Before Tackling The Novel For An Eventual Film

Way back in March, it was revealed that Wong Kar-wai was working on a new film, titled “Blossoms,” that he said would be a spiritual successor to his landmark films “In the Mood for Love” and “2046.” However, no release date or timetable for production was revealed. Now, according to Variety, it appears that the film version of the project is going to be delayed as the legendary filmmaker is taking a stab at a small-screen version of “Blossoms” first.

Variety is reporting that Tencent, one of the biggest Chinese production companies around, is working with Wong to produce a new web series based on the 2012 novel “Blossoms” by author Jin Yucheng. The novel is said to follow a young entrepreneur attempting to find wealth and romance during the 1990s economic boom in Shanghai. Previously, Wong stated that the film would be deeply personal for him due to its ties to Shanghai.

And perhaps most perplexing of all, just because Wong is producing a series based on “Blossoms,” the filmmaker isn’t giving up on his film adaptation either, in which he hopes to direct. This is a project that will be completely different than his film, but something that he will produce before he begins work on the big-screen version.

As mentioned, previously, Wong stated that “Blossoms” would serve as “the third part of ‘In The Mood For Love’ and ‘2046.’” Of course, if you’re a fan of his work, you already know that an informal trilogy of films featuring those two incredible projects already exists with “Days of Being Wild” preceding them. But hey, Wong Kar-wai is a legend and who are we to argue with him?

No word on when the series might begin filming, as “Blossoms” still doesn’t have a cast or a director attached.

A teaser poster for the project can be seen below:
