George R.R. Martin Swears He Won't Write A Script For 'House Of The Dragon' Before His Next 'Thrones' Book Is Released

We may be months removed from the highly-debated final season of “Game of Thrones,” but this last week has seen quite a bit of Westerosi news in the headlines. First, there was news that HBO passed on one of the proposed prequel series after watching the pilot episode. Then, we found out that the network signed a season order for “House of the Dragon.” And as an aside, it’s also worth pointing out that ‘Thrones’ TV creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss haven’t had the best week ever. But what are George R.R. Martin’s thoughts on all of this?

Well, as he’s prone to do, the author that created the whole ‘Thrones’ empire took to his blog to post an update about all things Westeros and Essos. And in doing so, he made his latest promise to book readers that could be seen as hugely optimistic or just another example of Daddy Martin promising he’ll come to our Little League Baseball game and then flake out at the last minute.

Basically, he made the promise that he expects to be involved in the development of “House of Dragons,” but Martin won’t write one single script for the show until he’s finished work on the long-awaited ‘Thrones’ novel “Winds of Winter

“I expect to be involved in all of this to some extent… and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of ‘Game of Thrones,’” wrote Martin.

He continued, “But… let me make this perfectly clear… I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered ‘Winds of Winter.’ Winter is still coming, and ‘Winds’ remains my priority, as much as I’d love to write an episode of ‘House.’”

As for what happened on the series that shot a pilot episode and was passed on by HBO, which was commonly known as “The Long Night,” Martin isn’t quite sure, but he wanted to make all the fans aware that the decision to cancel one prequel and move forward to another is not tied together in any way.

“I do not know why HBO decided not to go to series on this one, but I do not think it had to do with ‘House of the Dragon,’” he said. “This was never an either/or situation. If television has room enough for multiple ‘CSIs’ and ‘Chicago’ shows… well, Westeros and Essos are a lot bigger, with thousands of years of history and enough tales and legends and characters for a dozen shows.”

So, who wants to go to Vegas and place bets on whether or not we see Martin’s name on a script of “House of Dragons” before “Winds of Winter” hits store shelves?
