Got a Tip?

Woody Allen’s Shelved ‘A Rainy Day In New York’ Will Be Released In Europe Later This Year

We are fast approaching two years since Woody Allen filmed his latest feature “A Rainy Day in New York.” And while two years isn’t necessarily the longest stretch of time a filmmaker has had between filming and a formal release, it must feel like an eternity for Allen. You see, in that time, the filmmaker went from having a lucrative deal with Amazon to becoming one of the major names in the #MeToo movement (and not for good reasons) and his film being placed on the shelf, indefinitely. But if you live in Europe, and Italy, specifically, you’re going to get the chance to see ‘Rainy Day’ soon enough.

The Wrap is reporting (via Italian outlet il Fatto Quotidiano) that “A Rainy Day in New York” is set to be released in Italy on October 3, almost exactly 2 years after filming was completed. And after that, the report says the film will likely have distribution in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, as Allen is said to already have deals in place.

“A Rainy Day in New York” stars Elle Fanning and Timothée Chalamet as a young couple that spends…uh, a rainy day in New York, where they find themselves in a series of adventures. As with many of Allen’s previous films, ‘Rainy Day’ has an incredible supporting cast featuring Rebecca Hall, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Suki Waterhouse, Diego Luna, and Liev Schreiber.

Chalamet made headlines last year when he announced that he was donating his salary from the film to charity. He made the donation after the filmmaker found previous allegations of sexual abuse resurface thanks to the #MeToo movement. Since then, Allen has lost his deal with Amazon and been seemingly blacklisted from Hollywood.

As for a US release of “A Rainy Day in New York,” that is still to be determined. Amazon owned the rights for the film, as part of the company’s deal with Allen. However, the filmmaker and the tech company are in the middle of a $68 million lawsuit that Allen brought against Amazon for failing to uphold the studio’s end of the agreement. So, we’ll just have to wait and see if ‘Rainy Day’ will see a US release in the future.
