Presumably, you’re still reeling from last night’s Golden Globes Awards winners, chosen by aliens, errr, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Yes, it was a strange night with the musical, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” somehow not entered into the Musical Or Drama category winning Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actor – Drama for Rami Malek over the presumed winner “A Star Is Born.” There is still a lot of head-scratching over that one, but a reminder that the HFPA is not Academy Members or even Guild members, just film critics that no one actually knows, respects or reads, but work under the aegis of an organization with enough money to get an awards show on NBC. Ahem.

Back on planet earth, the members of the Writer’s Guild Of America—many members whom are Academy members—have released their 2019 nominations in several writing categories including Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay. And their nominations don’t’ seem so odd or out of place (sorry, no “Bohemian Rhapsody” to be seen).

On the film side, the original screenplays for “Green Book,” “A Quiet Place,” “Roma,” “Vice” and “Eighth Grade” were all nominated for Best Original Screenplay. In the adapted-screenplay category, the nominees were “BlacKkKlansman,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “A Star Is Born,” “Black Panther” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
The most egregious snubs that don’t bode well for the Oscars include Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed” and Josh Singer’s “First Man.” Although eligibility requirements differ, roughly two-thirds of WGA nominees usually go on to receive Oscar nominations in the screenwriting categories. So, you’re likely looking at most of your Oscar screenwriting nominees. Here’s the full list.
