What if the Y2K predictions were right? A new film offers its own comedic spin on an event that promised chaos but fizzled. “Y2K” sees two friends attend a seemingly ordinary New Year’s Eve party, one that happens to take place in 1999. Everything changes when the partygoers find themselves dealing with a host of murderous devices. The project hails from director Kyle Mooney. Mooney, an “SNL” alum, also co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Winter. “Y2K” debuted during the 2024 edition of SXSW and had critics noting its nostalgic approach.
This humorous take on disaster films features an intriguing cast. Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison star as the friends who reluctantly wind up at an ill-fated party. Rachel Zegler portrays Laura, a potential love interest for Martell’s character, Eli. The actress recently starred in the “Hunger Games” prequel “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” and can be seen in the upcoming Disney live-action “Snow White.”
Mooney’s involvement initially drew Zegler’s interest, with the script cementing her commitment to the project. “I just thought it was so different than anything I had gotten to do before — and I love Kyle,” the actress told WWD. “I’m a really big fan of his YouTube channel and of his work on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ so it was kind of a surefire ‘yes’ for me.”
The film’s official synopsis:
On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Year’s Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.
The Kid Laroi and Fred Durst also star in “Y2K.” The film premieres in theaters on December 6. Watch the new trailer below.
