‘You People’ Trailer: Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy & More Star In Kenya Barris’ New Multiracial Family Comedy

Best known for the television comedies “Black-ish,” “Grown-ish,” and “Mixed-ish,” writer, producer, director, and actor Kenya Barris has had a strong run looking at Black and multiracial families through a comedic lens. He’s done that on the big screen before with the modern version of “Cheaper by the Dozen,” but he really pluses the entire idea with his latest comedy, “You People,” which features an all-star cast for Netflix.

Written by Jonah Hill —who just released the Netflix documentary “Stutz”—and Barris, with Barris, also directing, “You People” features a spectacular cast and, most prominently, coaxes Eddie Murphy out of his sort-of retirement alongside Hill.

The film centers on a new couple (Hill and Lauren London) and their families examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations, and generational differences.

The comedy also stars David Duchovny, Nia Long, Sam Jay, Elliott Gould, Travis Bennett, Molly Gordon, Rhea Perlman, Deon Cole, Andrea Savage, Mike Epps, Emily Arlook, Alani La La Anthony, Bryan Greenberg, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Here’s the official synopsis:

When a rideshare mix-up in LA brings Ezra Cohen (Jonah Hill) and Amira Mohammed (Lauren London) together, the two find themselves connecting over a shared love of streetwear and music. As they fall in love, their relationship is tested by their respective families: Ezra’s progressive and semi-woke parents (Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny) and Amira’s unyielding yet concerned parents (Eddie Murphy and Nia Long) who inject themselves into their lives mercilessly. Kenya Barris’ feature film directorial debut is a modern love story set amidst clashing cultures and interfaith relationships. Co-written by Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill and produced by the two alongside Kevin Misher, the comedy features an all-star ensemble cast including Sam Jay, Elliott Gould, Travis Bennett, Molly Gordon, Rhea Perlman, Deon Cole, Andrea Savage, and Mike Epps.

“You People” debuts on Netflix January 27, 2023. Watch the new trailer below.
