In mid-December we reported on the soundtrack CD details for Michael Cera’s forthcoming (and delayed) “Youth In Revolt.” Though featuring minor indie rockers like Fruit Bats, Little Wings, Beulah and Fleshpot, overall, it wasn’t much to write home about it.
Today, at a press screening for the film (a full review with arrive soon, but in short, it has a lot of laughs, but runs out of steam even with its brief 90 minute length) we snagged a complete list of the songs in the film, and are sort of surprised at the tracks that were left off the official soundtrack.
French chanteuse Brigitte Bardot, indie hippie Devendra Banhart and Merge Records rockers Radar Bros. didn’t make the cut. Even Ashlee Simpson – whose music we can’t imagine costs much these days to license – didn’t make the grade (though in fairness, the song is used as a joke in the film). The exclusion of Bardot is interesting if only because in the film, Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday) is a big fan of all things French (particularly Jean-Paul Belmondo and the film “Breathless”) while Nick Twisp thinks the world would be a better place if the Frank Sinatra were played every hour. We’re guessing money was probably a factor here, and trying to get Bardot and Sinatra tunes (and here, it’s a tribute act that fills in for Frank) probably cost a little more coin than producers were willing to spend.
It should also be noted that Michael Cera, Charlyne Yi and Sudhi Rajagopal are given an “Additional Music” credit, but aside from Cera’s track (which we don’t remember hearing in the final cut) none of that work is found here, while only one track from John Swihart’s score gets an official release.
The official soundtrack is in stores and on iTunes today.
