While, on paper and over the course of their filmography, you can’t really say that there’s much in common between Quentin Tarantino and Zack Snyder. They seem to be on very different ends of the filmmaking spectrum. But both men are founts of film ideas, always talking in interviews about their various pitches for features that probably won’t get made. And in the case of Snyder, one of the more intriguing ideas he’s had appears to be in the similar vein as Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler.”

Speaking to The Telegraph, Snyder talked about his idea for a new spin on the idea of “The Wrestler,” but instead of focusing on a professional wrestler no longer in his prime (gloriously played by Mickey Rourke in Aronofsky’s film), the “Army of the Dead” director has an idea that genderswaps the lead and tells a new kind of story involving the world of pushing your body to the max.
“It’s a kind of female version of ‘The Wrestler,’ about a midwestern housewife who happens to have a pretty good body, and starts to do some bodybuilding competitions, and then falls down a rabbit hole of steroids and hormones,” Snyder explained. “It becomes a contest between fitness and family, and she loses her family because she’s spending all her money on diet supplements and drugs and trainers, and all of that stuff.”
As for who he’d like to lead the cast of his ‘Wrestler’-esque feature, Snyder thinks Amy Adams is the actress to bring it to life “because it would be such a hugely hard job just training to the point at which it was believable. And you need someone like Amy who loves the craft to do it.”
While the film doesn’t look like it’s in any sort of active development, Snyder said that he mentioned the idea to Adams who seemed keen on it.
Another idea that the filmmaker has for future features includes two genres that fans might not immediately consider Snyder a good fit for. It appears the director’s love of the human body (on display in his various films, but most notably, in “300,” where most of the cast consists of shredded men in the smallest bits of clothing possible) is part of a desire two branch into a couple of unique genres.
“That kind of appreciation of the human form is something I really warmed to,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to make a religious film and a pornographic film, and I’ve never really yet had the chance to do either. Maybe if I could combine the two…Or maybe ‘300’ is that film, in some sense, a little bit. Or at least a primer for what that film could be.”
The religious imagery in his superhero films, particularly with how he frames Superman in the DC Universe, makes it obvious that Snyder has an affinity for that sort of religious visual language. However, the idea of him doing an auteur porno is unique, to say the least.
So, when given the option of watching a steroided-out Amy Adams, a religious feature, or a porno from Zack Snyder, what intrigues you the most? While you ponder, you can watch “Army of the Dead” on Netflix now.
