After nearly four years of waiting, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” aka the Snyder Cut, is finally available for fans to watch over and over again. That is, of course, if they have 4 hours to spare to experience the whole thing. But now that the original vision for “Justice League” has been unleashed on the world, what’s next? Will Snyder return for more DC features? According to the man himself, the possibility of more “Justice League” films or superhero features, in general, isn’t looking good.
When asked by Variety if the fan outcry for Zack Snyder’s vision of the DCEU to be revived and continued, it doesn’t seem like the filmmaker believes it’ll ever happen.
“Yeah, I’m not sure that’s a thing. I think it’s amazing and I love the fans and I love that enthusiasm,” said Snyder. “Like I said before, the truth is, in retrospect, it’s more likely that they would have made a sequel [to ‘Justice League’] than going back and redoing a movie that had already been released. But I just think that like this was a Herculean effort for all of us, and Warner Bros., they have their big plan for the DCU, even to the point where they told me — and I’m fine with it — that the theatrical cut of ‘Justice League’ is what they consider canon for their universe. So I’m just like, you know, this little Elseworlds experiment. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to finish the movie. But, yeah, I don’t know if there’s anything else in the future.”
Though that might seem like he’s leaving the door open for potential DC superhero films in the future, in an interview with Deadline, he seems to be a bit more pessimistic when it comes to the idea of directing more comic book movies.
“Well, look, there are some comic books that I’m a fan, so there are comic books I love, you know?” he explained. “I’ve always wanted to do Frank Miller’s ‘Dark Knight Returns’ and a couple others, but I don’t know. I’m just, I’m pretty happy with just kind of working, the movie that we just finished, but I don’t really have like a burning desire to make another comic book movie, I’ll say.”
So, while the end of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” clearly teases a whole slew of potential films, with at least two more ‘JL’ features, it doesn’t appear that the filmmaker is really amped on returning to the world. Especially considering he readily admits that Joss Whedon’s version is canon. Though maybe there’s the chance at an animated sequel or comic book adaptations? We’ll just have to wait and see.
“Zack Snyder’s Justice League” is available now on HBO Max.
