Zack Snyder Is "A Little Tapped Out" With VFX & Wants To Do "Something Small" For His Next Film

Over the weekend, people had their first chance to watch the director’s cuts of both “Rebel Moon” features on Netflix. Well before the original edits of the film were released earlier this year, filmmaker Zack Snyder talked about how the director’s cuts were the true vision of the sci-fi epics, packed with more action and sex. So, with the first two “Rebel Moon” films in the rearview, what’s next for the filmmaker? Well, apparently something much smaller.

Speaking to THR, while promoting the aforementioned “Rebel Moon” director’s cuts, Zack Snyder was asked what he would be working on next. While he was playing coy with exact plans, he did say that whatever it is, it would be much smaller and without a ton of VFX work.

“…I do want to do something small. I’m a little tapped out on the visual effects world right now,” Snyder explained. “I love it, don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan, but I would love to do something a little bit more organic.”

In a recent episode of the ReelBlend podcast, Snyder echoed the desire to make something small, but hinted that it isn’t even written yet.

“We’re trying to do a small movie right now. I’m not going to say what it is,” he said. “I was like, ‘Can I just do a movie without any visual effects in it for like five minutes?’ And then we can get back to the insanity. So that’s what we’re trying to do right now. I’m supposed to be writing this little movie.”

Could we be looking at a little Sundance indie from Snyder? Judging by his filmography, that just seems like it will never happen. But it does feel like the filmmaker is ready to try something different. And honestly, it’s probably the best decision he could make.

Whether you enjoy his work or not, everyone can acknowledge the biggest gripes about Snyder’s filmmaking is his over-reliance on filmmaking tricks and VFX. This is because, for years now, he’s been working on tentpole films. While he does try to pepper in real emotion, a lot of it gets drowned out by his desire for huge battles. All that to say, if Snyder wants to surprise people and prove that he’s a multi-faceted filmmaker, a little indie might not be the worst idea ever.

Regardless, it does appear that whatever project is next, it’s still a ways off.
