Anyone who thinks Warner Bros. is itching to greenlight more Snyderverse films beyond “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” might want to guess again. If a new interview with Zack Snyder and is any indication, the relationship between filmmaker and studio remains strained at best.
Snyder has been promoting his buzzed-about zombie flick “Army of The Dead” and, of course, his time working on the DCEU and the Snyder Cut, a source of fascination to fans and average folks interested in the behind-the-scenes drama behind the making of “Justice League,” keeps coming up.
Speaking with Uproxx, it doesn’t sound like working with the studio on the Snyder Cut was easy, and WarnerMedia may have been resentful for finally having to fold into the demands of the toxic #ReleaseTheSnyderCut group. Snyder calls working with Warner Bros. on the HBO Max project as “torture” and did so unprompted by the interviewer. Additionally, he believes they see him as a “pain in their ass.”
“Oh god yeah. God yeah. It was cool to do the Snyder Cut of “Justice League,“ and that was fun and everything. But Warner Bros. still tortured me the whole time for whatever reason; they can’t help it. I don’t know why I’m such a fucking pain in their ass because I’m not trying to be, honestly,” the filmmaker told Uproxx.
He continued to talk about his frustrating working relationship with the studio, again, mostly unprompted about the details. “I don’t want to get in trouble either, but I’m not going to sit here and let them act like that and not… Look, they’re the ones that have been aggressive, not me. I haven’t done anything. Every day they’d turn around and do some weird passive-aggressive thing.”
Despite those comments, Zack is still grateful he got to finish the film, “But look, like I say, I had a great time making “Justice League.” I’m super glad I got to finish it.” Snyder also talked up new his relationship with Netflix on “Army of The Dead” as super positive, and it sounds like the streamer could be his for the foreseeable future .”I just had an amazing experience with Netflix, and it was awesome, and we had a great partnership and an incredibly great experience. So the only thing I would say is that it’s an unusual situation.” Zack and Netflix are flushing out a zombie franchise with the prequel film “Army of Thieves” and an animated spinoff “Army of The Dead: Lost Vegas.”
By the sounds of these comments, it’s likely restoring the Snyderverse isn’t a priority for either party (and it’s doubtful WB will ever say yes), and Snyder will likely move on to his zombie world on Netflix.
