Got a Tip?

Zoey Deutch Cast As Jean Seberg In Richard Linklater’s Upcoming French New Wave Film

For several months now, “Boyhood” filmmaker Richard Linklater has been vaguely hinting at making a French New Wave Film shot in Paris, but what that actually meant, given lack of details seemed vague. Now, it seems like the shape of the film is starting to become clearer. People reveals a first look at Zoey Deutch who has been cast as French New Wave actress Jean Seberg, known for her star-making turn in Jean-Luc Godard’s breakthrough 60s film “Breathless.”

Or at least, a first look her Deutch’s new pixiecut hairdo for the film.

Reportedly titled “Nouvelle Vague”—what the French called the French New Wave movement in the 1960s—the film was originally thought to be the making of “Breathless.” But the rumored title and new casting notices—asking for actors that look like a young Jean-Pierre Léaud, circa François Truffaut’s “The 400 Blows,” and Martin Lassale, who starred in Robert Bresson’sPickpocket” (1959)— suggest something much more expansive, and perhaps a kind of how the French New Wave movement happened.

With casting underway now, the full scope of the film and who else it includes—presumably actors being cast in roles like New Wave auteurs like Godard and Truffaut—should be unveiled shortly.

Seberg shot to fame after “Breathless” in 1960, her chic haircut instantly becoming a fashionable trend. She starred in dozens of films afterward, but the actress has always been inextricably tied to Godard’s French New Wave classic.

Linklater was short on details in the past, but last fall, he gave a brief tease of the film’s existence. “I’m hoping to make a film [in Paris],” he told filmmaker Gregg Araki in an Interview conversation published last October. “In French. It’s like a New Wave film. I hope to [have French actors in it].”

Seberg was an American actress working in France at the time, so casting for Deutch works if Linklater is still hoping to cast French actors to play the various filmmakers and thespians that comprised the Nouvelle Vague scene. Check out some images of Deutch below.
