It’s a while since we’ve played “Dungeons & Dragons,” but our memory, while hazy, is that an Ansel Elgort is a type of Elgort that you meet in the south of Faerûn on Abeir-Toril. Warriors of some repute, they’re often helpful unless you’re aligned to House Baenre, and can be the source of some extremely powerful magic items.
Wait, no, sorry, it’s the name of an actor. We got confused because Deadline report that Elgort, best known for “The Fault In Our Stars,” has signed on to star in the “Dungeons & Dragons” movie that Warner Bros have been developing for some time, which will be directed by “Goosebumps” helmer Rob Letterman from a script by “The Conjuring 2”’s David Leslie Johnson.
It will shock you to learn that the film is described as being “a fantasy adventure centering on a warrior and his band of mystical creatures as they embark on a dangerous journey to find a mythical treasure.” Deadline also report that Vin Diesel, a long-time D&D-er, has expressed interest in taking a role in the film, though there’s no word if it’ll happen yet.
We josh him, but Elgort’s been a pretty winning presence when we have seen him, and we suspect that he’s about to win a lot more fans as the lead role in Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver.” So long as this turns out better than the early-00s, Jeremy Irons-starring “Dungeons & Dragons” movie, it’s probably a good move for him. There’s no release date for “Dungeons & Dragons” yet, but we imagine it’ll be sometime in 2018 (there’s an ‘Untitled WB Event Film’ Christmas Day slot that year with its name on it).
