As the saying goes, don’t fix what isn’t broke. Having collaborated on Todd Haynes’ “Velvet Goldmine,” “Carol” and HBO miniseries “Mildred Pierce,” Carter Burwell is set to reunite with the director on the upcoming drama “Wonderstruck.”
Starring Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, Oakes Fegley, Cory Michael Smith and Tom Noonan, and based on Brian Selznick’s children’s novel “Wonderstruck,” the film traces the intertwined stories of two deaf children set fifty years apart. Both children wish their lives were different; one child dreams of a mysterious actress while the other yearns for the father he has never known.

Burwell received his first Academy Award nomination for his work on “Carol,” so perhaps the fourth time’s a charm. So far the odds are in Burwell and Haynes’ favor. Along with “Wonderstruck’s” stacked cast, Selznick’s previous book, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret,” was the basis for the Martin Scorsese outlier “Hugo.” Despite flopping at the box office, “Hugo” premiered to rapturous reviews, topped many critics’ Top Ten lists in 2011 and received a slew of Academy Awards. It could very well be possible that with “Wonderstruck,” cinematic lightning could strike twice.
“Wonderstruck” is to be released in 2017 by Amazon Studios. [Film Music Reporter]
