David Lynch Keeps Door Open For Another Season Of 'Twin Peaks'

Was “Twin Peaks” a success for Showtime this summer? That depends on the perspective you’re willing to take. On the one hand, the hard numbers weren’t great, with the return of David Lynch‘s cult series averaging 2 million viewers, a far cry from the draw of other shows on the network such as “Billions” (4.6 million viewers) or the first season of “The Affair” (4.1 million). However, neither of those shows captured the zeitgeist in the same way, nor spurred such enthusiastic conversation with each episode. Just as it did in the 1990s, “Twin Peaks” was a pop culture moment once again, and you can’t really put a dollar value on that.

Ever since it was first announced, it was assumed and even stated that the return of “Twin Peaks” was a one-shot deal — 18 episodes and it was over. However, it seems like Lynch is relenting on that just a little bit.

At a recent “Online with David Lynch” event in Belgrade (via Reddit), the director took a break from talking about transcendental mediation to keep hope alive for someone who asked about a possible fourth season of “Twin Peaks.”

“It’s too early to talk about that, if it were to happen, you wouldn’t see anything in the next 2 or 3 years, because the last season took 5 years to make,” Lynch said.

I know, there’s not much to that quote, but he didn’t say “no” outright. Given that Lynch has long been singing the praises of the freedom of cable television, perhaps he feels creatively reinvigorated. In fact, Lynch has always liked television because the medium allows him to never have to finish a story…..

So who knows, maybe he’ll return once again. Certainly, there’s at least 2 million people who will be glad to go back to “Twin Peaks.” Until then, you can revisit third season, when it drops on DVD and Blu-ray in December.
