The heartening theme of recent years? Actors trapped in sub-par material elevating their game by working with top-shelf directors. Kristen Stewart has gone along this path, as has Robert Pattinson, and another actor attempting to course-correct his overall narrative is Charlie Hunnam. The “Sons Of Anarchy” star has struggled to make an impression on the big screen, and even in “Pacific Rim,” he never seemed comfortable in action-leading-man skin.
But by all accounts (including our NYFF review), Hunnam’s best work so far is featured in James Gray’s upcoming jungle epic, “The Lost City Of Z.” Some thought this was an egregious omission on our guide to The 100 Most Anticipated Films Of 2017. Well, the trick was on you: It’s part of the 20 Best Films Of 2017 we’ve already seen.
“The Lost City Of Z” stars the aforementioned Hunnam and Pattinson, plus Sienna Miller, Tom Holland, and Angus Macfadyen. Here’s the synopsis:
Based on author David Grann’s nonfiction bestseller, THE LOST CITY OF Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region.
