While Harvey Weinstein can be given to hyperbole, when he says that he believes the upcoming “Lion” could earn up to eight or nine Oscar nominations, it’s still worth taking notice. And with the picture slated to make its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, it’s adding another big event to the calendar.

The BFI London Film Festival has announced that “Lion” will make its UK premiere at the event as part of its American Express Gala. Directed by Garth Davis (“Top Of The Lake“), and starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, and Nicole Kidman, the film tells the true story of a young man from the Calcutta slums, who becomes separated from his parents and the small village where he grew up, and years later, tracks them down with a little help from Google Maps. Here’s the official synopsis:
Directed by Garth Davis, and adapted from Saroo Brierley’s engrossing memoir “A Long Way Home”. LION tells the true story of how a wrong train takes a five-year-old Indian boy hundreds of miles from home; he survives many challenges before being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, haunted by memories of his childhood, he learns of a new technology called Google Earth, and sets out to find his lost family.
“Lion” opens on November 25th.
