Paul Feig Says Extended Cut Of ‘Ghostbusters’ Will Hit Home Video

Well, the verdict on “Ghostbusters” has arrived (our review) and the response has been mixed. There are enough negative reviews to unfortunately fuel the sexist dorks whose underoos have been tightened with the knowledge of women taking the leads of their beloved franchise (incidentally, the majority of the problems with the film have nothing to do with the cast). But there are also enough positive notices to encourage those who have been eagerly awaiting the team-up of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. But it looks like the theatrical cut is just one version of the movie that will be scrutinized.

Director Paul Feig has long had a habit of extending his movies for home video, with “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat” and “Spy” all arriving in unrated editions, and it looks like “Ghostbusters” will be getting the same sort of treatment.

“We are literally, as I talk to you, I’m on lunch break from doing our extended cut of the movie. There will be one, and it will be a good 15 to 17 minutes longer than the theatrical feature,” he revealed to DVD Talk.

We’ve already seen how an extended cut can change opinion, with many saying that Zack Snyder’s R-rated version of “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” with 30 more minutes improves the picture. So maybe those more critical of Feig’s movie may be swayed with the bonus material. But let’s face it, more material doesn’t necessarily make a better picture if the core concept is fundamentally flawed. And is “Ghostbusters” a movie that really needs to run more than two hours long?

No doubt, the conversation hasn’t finished for “Ghostbusters” which opens on Friday.
