Does this sound familiar to you? There’s a new “Terminator” reboot (or whatever, I honestly could care less about timelines at this point or what they’re actually calling it) that will see some old faces return, with the idea of passing the torch to a new, young female lead. That’s right, this is what they attempted to dismal results in “Terminator Genisys” just two years ago, but fuck it, they’re going to do it again.
James Cameron‘s Skydance and Paramount are now pushing forward with yet another “Terminator” movie that will try and move the franchise forward, while clinging desperately to the past. As previously announced, “Deadpool” helmer Tim Miller will direct the first instalment in what’s planned as a new trilogy, and both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton will be reprising their roles, at least for the first movie.
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story,” Cameron said (via THR). “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
The plans are ambitious for this one, with Cameron and Miller setting up a writers room for the future films — and in this climate, you can probably count on spinoffs too — which includes David Goyer (“Blade,” “The Dark Knight” trilogy), Charles Eglee (co-creator of “Dark Angel“), Josh Friedman (“The Sarah Connor Chronicles“) and Goyer collaborator, Justin Rhodes.
I can’t say I’m excited by any of this. As if steeling myself to write about “Avatar” sequels for years to come isn’t enough, having to add another unwanted series of Cameron produced sequels with this “Terminator” thing might be a bridge too far. Please fold time and send me back to an era when this wasn’t happening….
