Got a Tip?

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Takes A Big Swing Into Cinemas [Box Office]

When “Spider-Man: Homecoming” was first announced, there were many who groaned about a reboot coming just three years after Sony scrapped their Spidey plans following “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” However, a canny partnership with Marvel, and a lively take on the character by Tom Holland (first previewed to a winning reception in “Captain America: Civil War“) have added up to a new webslinger that audiences can’t resist.

‘Homecoming’ had a huge debut this weekend, taking in $117 million domestic, for the second best debut of any film this summer, and third best of the year (behind “Beauty & The Beast” and “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2“). The film is the second best opening for ‘Spider-Man’ in franchise history (coming behind “Spider-Man 3“), and is now on track to crack $300 million domestic, which hasn’t been done by any movie in the series since Sam Raimi‘s trilogy. Even more, ‘Homecoming’ pocketed another $140 million internationally bringing the total global debut to $257 million. Damn. Things really couldn’t have gone better for the film, which has also received near unanimous praise from critics, and Sony and Marvel have plenty to celebrate. This is a partnership that likely won’t be ending anytime soon.

The box office was otherwise pretty quiet, but there are some things to note. It looks like word of mouth is really helping Edgar Wright‘s “Baby Driver,” as the film only saw a modest 38% drop as it heads into its second weekend, chalking up another $12.7 million. The film has now tallied a very healthy $56.8 million, and it’s likely going to spend the rest of the summer quietly and impressively padding out its bottom line. Speaking of word of mouth, “The Big Sick” jumped into the top ten, with the film now playing on 326 screens, and taking in a healthy $3.6 million. It’s a great achievement for a movie boasting no big A-list stars in the lead roles.

In limited release, David Lowery‘s “A Ghost Story” starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck got started on four screens, taking in $108,067.
